Being a captain is more than just an armband or a handshake. It is a lifestyle, with many privileges, but just as many responsibilities, something I hope a certain Mr Ferdinand will bear in mind in the build up to South Africa. While it may be the case that the role of the captain has diminished somewhat in recent years, it is still an important role in every sport, and something wannabe youngsters can still aspire to. As a player the rest of the team look up to, Gallas failed to bring the squad together, breeding discontent and unease, something a club captain cannot afford to let happen. Just as captains enjoy the privilege of lifting the trophies during times of success, they must also assume the blame when things go wrong.
