Norridge is our entertaining tour guide as he takes us through the origins of different sports since BC, where they began as human instincts. However, the title is misleading, as it turns out that the British did not actually invent many sports - apart from those that began because people gambled on them. This book is impressively researched, yet it can get a bit tedious as endless, sometimes mundane, facts are reeled off. I feel Norridge could have made this book shorter and more concise. However, there are some gems of information. For example, swimming was only introduced to clean lots of the public at low cost, and the winner of the first motor race had been travelling at a snail's pace of 11mph. I was also quite interested to discover that the monarchy banned sport as they did not want the public to be distracted from defending the realm. Norridge saves this from being a drab factual book with his satirical commentary. Injecting some humour and personality makes this story light and easy to read. Can we have our… Continue reading...

A vastly improved University side posed their Metropolitan counterparts with a stern challenge on Wednesday but still suffered a third defeat in four years, losing 28-17. University players didn't have to go far for consolation, though, as the Nightline Owl was on hand to offer a commiserating wing to the losers. Read more

The Uni side were ruthless in attack throughout, and an equally impressive defensive display saw them shutout the Met for almost three quarters of the game to record a comprehensive victory in the Carnegie Pool. A rampant Leeds Met side comprehensively beat the Uni in Wednesday’s Varsity showpiece at Beckett’s Park. Met took control of the game right from the kick off, and stormed into a three goal lead early on through Emma Litman and a brace from Jessica Durran.

Leeds claimed a hard-fought win over a recently relegated Northumbria at Weetwood on Wednesday. Well-taken goals from Leanne Royle and Becky Marsh gave Uni a winning start to their new BUCS campaign and the perfect follow up to their Varsity win last week.

In October, Jenson Button claimed a shock World Championship and led his Brawn team to a Constructor's Championship in their debut season. Button had finished the previous season eighteenth from twenty-five drivers, and hadn't claimed a Grand Prix win since 2006.
