Former Leeds Graduate, Scott Dean, is taking the music industry by storm in the UK's National Music competition, Live and Unsigned. Scott, 26, moved to Leeds in September 2000, where he studied for four years to gain a BA Hons. degree in Popular and World Music. Whilst in Leeds he fronted two bands, Ridgeway and Kryah, which have both helped to develop and establish the style which he now delivers as a solo artist. He has managed to grab the attention of the judges of the 2009 Live and Unsigned competition, making his way into the Area Finals, meaning he's only one step away from competing in the Grand Final. Live and Unsigned is the UK's national music competition for unsigned acts to compete live. With over 10,000 registrations for the second year running, it's the biggest music talent search for original acts in the UK. The overall winner of the competition wins a recording and management contract with Future Music, with an investment of up to £20,000 to release their single including professional studio time, promotional campaigns and more.… Continue reading...

Concept albums are difficult beasts. The fictional society portrayed from various perspectives in this debut is imaginative and colourful, but seems contrived and lacking in any real point. The songs themselves, however, are engaging enough to render the concept redundant... Read more

First listening to New Surrender's opening track "The Resistance' one thought echoes in the cranium: another band jumping onto the "emotional rock' band-wagon (what else does one expect from the producer of Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard and New Found Glory?). However, this Miami-based quintet has (mostly) proved my Numbskulls wrong. Read more

Always the same pattern. "What kind of stuff you into?' The fundamental building block of musical small talk is voiced and I see it all playing out in my mind - pre-emptive déjà vu. "Metal,' I say... and things go one of two ways. If I'm lucky, I'll get a look down a nose emitting a snort of derision. If I'm not, I'm confronted with a facial expression of shock and disgust not unlike the response I'd expect upon brandishing a knife and advocating bunny sacrifice. (Not that I'd ever do that of course: kittens are a far more satisfying challenge.) Yes, I am probably exaggerating, but I guarantee any metal fan will be faced with this situation on a shockingly regular basis. Unfortunately, I'm not here to offer a support group - that's a different meeting. Read more

"Before I had a band I called myself Riding the Low," Paddy Considine growls in his elusive midlands accent, explaining the genesis of his recently-formed group's moniker. For a man who made his name in film - perhaps most famously as Richard in Shane Meadows' 2005 classic, Dead Man's shoes - this switch to music will come as a surprise to many. Yet Considine is at pains to impress that the area of artistic expression to which he has now turned his focus was within him all along. "After my wife bought me a guitar about 15 years ago I just started writing songs. I didn't know how to play guitar but I learnt and started putting things together and ended up writing about 50 different songs and sketches, different bits and pieces. Now I'm at a point where I just wanna do what the hell I want." Read more

This dark electro-pop outfit is the brainchild of Wesley Eisold - famous for a noisy quarrel with the guy from Fall Out Boy about stolen lyrics, eventually settled out of court to Eisold's financial advantage.

These 1980s indie-punk pioneers are generally considered one of those bands that are criminally underrated amongst today’s youth, but are massively respected by their once-cool dads.

When last we saw la belle Gainsbourg, she was mutilating herself in a most private place at the behest of malevolent directing genius Lars von Trier in last year’s harrowing Antichrist. This, hot on the heels of a near-fatal brain haemorrhage, has hardly left her in the best mindset to record the follow-up to 2006’s critically acclaimed 5:55.

Having undertaken production duties for artists from Kylie Minogue to Kelis and securing a grammy for work on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ along the way, it’s not surprising how confident and exciting a show Miike Snow puts on.

The audience at the Brudenell tonight seem divided. Upon hearing that Times New Viking were playing in Leeds, local music forums were swamped with accusations that the headliners were ‘the worst band ever’ and that they epitomise everything that’s wrong with the current trend for attempts at shit-fi sound quality. The gig also happens to boast a strong line-up of support acts, meaning that most of these aforementioned Negative Nancys are biting their tongues and turning up anyway.
