The Low Down – Whine and Dine

The Low Down – Whine and Dine

I’m going to start this article by stressing how fucking brilliant I am at eating. I am to juggernauting through plates of dinner and smashing in piles of butties what Nigella Lawson is to eliciting boners whilst rustling up a goulash – hideously effective. Due to the volume, speed and variety of foods that I [...]

Theatre Review: Way Out West, The Sea Whispered Me

Theatre Review: Way Out West, The Sea Whispered Me

It is Wednesday night in the Workshop Theatre. A semi-naked man beats his partner with a huge sandy tarpaulin while screaming ‘I AM A STORM’. His victim lies prostrate on the ground, ranting philosophically about the fact that we are all, in fact, clouds… One could certainly accuse Cupola Bobber (collaborative duo Stephen Fiehn and Tyler B. Myers) of their work ‘Way Out West, The Sea Whispered Me’ being unexplainable, if not a little pretentious. The long silences, repetitions, and bizarre conceptual scenes mean that ‘Way out West’ is not particularly accessible.

Film Review: The American

Film Review: The American

Unfortunately for Anton Corbijn, director of The American, he has created a film that is likely to disappoint viewers. This is partly due to the film’s trailer which promises George Clooney as an assassin, surrounded by guns and hot girls. The fantastic promotional poster captures more of the film’s intended subtlety, but again this is an area where the film sadly disappoints, making it neither subtle or action packed.

LS2 talks to Leeds Graduate Tehmina Sunny about her new movie Elevator, ‘Otley Running’ and life in LA…

Leeds Student: You took a Bsc in Business and Computing at Leeds, how did you get into acting?

Tehmina Sunny: Oh my God, it wasn’t planned at all! I was into things like computing, business and economics, but when I finished university I moved back to London, and because I was into song writing and singing, I took a couple of acting classes to help. While I was doing that I was skint, so I started doing some commercial, background and extra work.

Art Exhibition: ‘Fancy and Imagination: Beardsley and the Book Illustrators’

Art Exhibition: ‘Fancy and Imagination: Beardsley and the Book Illustrators’

A new exhibition detailing the life and work of Aubrey Beardsley opens at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery this week, showcasing various examples of work from one of the most eminent illustrators at the end of the Nineteenth Century. Set in context with other artists of the time (Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway and Jessie M King), the exhibition also focuses on the abundance of illustration between 1890 and the 1920s, and Beardsley’s fundamental place within this much wider arena.
