Film Review: Catfish

Film Review: Catfish

A new genre is emerging: the social network thriller. This year has seen a number of films about the web such as The Social Network and Trust, directed by David Schwimmer, about a schoolgirl who is targeted by a sexual predator on the Internet. However, unlike The Social Network, which has been accused of adding fictitious elements to the story of the creation and rise of Facebook everything that happens in Catfish is completely true. As the old saying goes: truth is often stranger than fiction.

Film Review: Never Let Me Go

Film Review: Never Let Me Go

Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go is the beautiful yet haunting tale of Kathy, Tommy and Ruth. Without having read the book, the film is wonderfully unpredictable. Both the trailer and synopsis barely hint at the science-fiction behind the romance and drama that the film promises.

Film Review: Dog Pound

Kim Chapiron’s 2010 film follows Butch, Davis and Angel; the latest additions to Enola Vale Correctional Facility, as they attempt to keep their heads down and their noses clean in a brutally aggressive and stereotypically hierarchical Juvenile Detention Centre.

Theatre Review: Oleanna

Joe Miller review’s York Theatre Royal’s production of David Mamet’s intense drama Oleanna

Film Review: Kosmos

Bird noise based flirting, regular close-ups of horses’ eyes and an unexplained falling satellite are just some of the things on offer in weird Turkish film Kosmos. However once you allow the film to settle in your mind, there does appear to be some method in the madness…

Film Review: Jackass 3D

Film Review: Jackass 3D

Without question Jackass 3D delivers in a way that a lot of blockbusters in the last two years have not. Unlike a lot of movie content, its trademark gross-out gags are perfectly suited to three dimensions, and you haven’t seen 3D used to its fullest until you have had a sex toy fired at you from a cannon, seen a party whistle extend from someone’s backside and witnessed a man projectile vomit out of the screen.
