Our EGM

Message from the Editor to the member of Leeds Student

Dear Members

I would like to notify you of an upcoming EGM held on Wednesday 9th May 2012 in Meeting Room 6 at 12pm.

The Leeds Student Newspaper is calling an EGM in order to vote on motions discussed in the previous AGM that were not voted upon at the meeting. This was because correct notice of 5 working days was not given to members of the proposed motions. These were:

1. To include, under point 3.7 Editorial selection Process, a clause which specifies that candidates running for editor are subjected to passing an interview panel consisting of the Media Development Coordinator, The Activities Officer, The Business Development coordinator and an professional journalist. That panel should have the power to disallow a candidate to run, but ONLY if they fail meet all points raised in the candidate criteria (If you require this or would like to look at it, please contact editor@leedsstudent.org.)

In order to comply with Union legislation, Leeds Student must have three elected individuals: a President, Secretary and Treasurer as outlined in LUU sample constitution point three:

3 Committee

3.1 The committee shall consist of three Core Officers, and any Additional Officers required.

As the editor is elected and acts as president of the society, the society only needs to elect the roles of Secretary and Treasurer. This must be written into our constitution under 3.6 Additional Officers. During the EGM we will discuss the most suitable means for this election. As editor, I suggest that we create a system of candidates giving a short speech followed by a raised hand member vote at the annual AGM.

Once we had completed this, we will then elected two separate individuals into the two roles.

If there are any other matters that should be discussed at the EGM, please contact the editor on editor@leedsstudent.org before the 4th May.

Only paid members of the society will be able to vote on the above. If you’d like to join, click here

Thanks and see you there
