Classic FM proves a revision favourite

More of you are tuning in to Classic FM during the exam season, figures released by the station have shown.

Listener statistics from 2009 reveal that the number of 15-24 year old students tuning in jumped by over 40 per cent during the revision months of April to June. This equated to 219,000 student listeners a week, an increase of 65,000 from the previous three months.

The radio station suggests that the increase is due to the fact that classical music has been proven to improve concentration but cannot provide any evidence for this.

Second year English Literature student, Tabitha Thorlu-Bangura, is one exam-time listenerClassic FM . She said: “I listen to Classic FM when I’m studying because it’s nicer than working in silence, but not a huge distraction. I started listening to BBC Radio 3 recently though on a recommendation from a friend and it turns out that that’s even better!”

Not all students feel that Classic FM helps them to revise however. PJ Harris, a second year Music student, said: “Classic FM annoys me with it’s clueless presenters!” while David Croshaw, a second year studying Popular and World Music, said: “I find any music distracting when I revise”.
