Paul Gold’s househunting tips
Paul Gold, LUU Community Officer tells Leeds Student some of his tips for dealing with landlords and finding the perfect house.
What is the best advice you would give to students who are house hunting?
Definitely wait until January when the Unipol houses are released but even if you go with a Unipol house, get your contract checked by the Student Advice Centre because landlords can be friends of Unipol without being members.
What is Unipol?
Unipol are a student housing specialist and a bureau that gives advice. They also own properties and halls of residence. They are a kind of estate agent that set a code of standards for landlords. The Student Union sits on its board of trustees; Unipol is a joining of universities and polytechnics. If a landlord is Unipol accredited they must adhere to a minimum standard, though membership is not compulsory. One advantage of Unipol is that they give you your money back if you under spend on energy.
Would you suggest waiting until September to get a cheaper house or is it too much of a risk?
They will be much cheaper in September because landlords are desperate but you might not get exactly what you need. You’ve got to take each house on its merits.
Finally, is there anything you should look out for that would suggest a landlord isn’t trustworthy?
Whatever you do, don’t sign anything when looking around a house.
