June 10 -16
The University of Leeds’ School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies proudly presents Come See My Drawings of Eagles, one of few art exhibitions in the scope of the history of art to feature a live animal as an exhibit, a Golden Eagle. Whilst the bird of prey will be a highlight, the students have also designed an ambitious installation consisting of a monumental, hexagonal pyramid to house thirty-three undergraduates’ final year work.
Leeds seems to be experiencing a renaissance of bird-inspired events, such as Leeds Museums & Galleries’ Flock Together, and this exhibition promises to be one of the stand-out moments in the city’s cultural calendar this year.
The students have painstakingly deliberated what will make their exhibition different to the numerous degree shows taking place throughout the UK. By planning an innovative exhibition strategy, they hope to inspire others to undertake similar risk-taking enterprises. In this spirit, they have designed the hexagonal construction around the utopist Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, a unique structure in which to hang works in mediums as variable as sound, sculpture, and animation, and subject matter as disparate as bugs, teeth and Christian and Islamic theology. Whilst the eagle’s broad historical symbology, from the Roman Empire to modern America, performs a multifaceted operation; either as a potential metaphor for the art collector scouting for the ‘next big-thing’, or the process of developing one’s own artistic language or even as a reflection of the majesty with which ‘high art’ is perceived.
An extensive programme of artist talks will be taking place over the week-long exhibition, identifying links between their work and ideas associated with the exhibition and its content. Please note: The eagle will only be present at the preview, to be replaced by an effigy for the remainder of the exhibition. For further details please visit the website.
Supported by the University of Leeds.
