REVIEW: Las Iguanas

LS samples the new Spring menu

When the opportunity arose to sample the new spring menu at Las Iguanas, which is hidden behind the Corn Exchange in the city centre, I had to take it.

It’s clear that a great amount of thought has been put into the concept of the restaurant, inspired by South America. Despite being a part of a chain the Leeds Las Iguanas has its own unique style. And the exotic dining and drinking atmosphere is credit to this.

The array of original cocktails on offer are certainly a pre or post dining must. The cocktails are made with Cachaça – a liquor made from fermented sugarcane – from the chain’s own sugar cane plantation near Rio. You can even drink Cachaca straight. Don’t miss the two for one offer during Happy Hour from midday until half seven and all day on Sundays and Mondays.

The chefs showed a wealth of experience with the delicious Tapas dishes. We tried three as starters, but wished we’d had more.

Las Iguanas boasts Brazilian dishes as their speciality. The Moqueca curry with salmon, mussels, crayfish & king prawns – for a reasonable £10.90 – is a great choice and was packed full of exciting and unusual flavours.

Typical south American dishes can be found in the ‘Latin street food’ section of the menu such as fajitas served with chicken, steak, or shelled king prawns, or with the vegetarian option of asparagus & artichoke in a honey-soy marinade.

The flexibility of the menu means that this is a great place to go on a special occasion, take your parents or have a cheap meal with friends. And there’s a good range of vegetarian and gluten and nut free options.

Offers include a lunch and early evening set menus from £6.50 and great deals on Tapas with 3 dishes for £12.60 and 5 for £21. And the house wine is decent.

But, it is definitely the chilled dining experience, even on a quiet Tuesday evening, that is Las Iguanas’ best selling point.
