Wire, 10/02/10

As I descended into Wire I was immediately hit by a wall of not just sound but sheer energy. This new monthly night has really hit the ground running with a lineup featuring Heny G, Scratcha and Ramadanman. These are artists who are difficult to pigeonhole, all playing multiple styles of music and rarely if ever seen on the same bill.

When I arrived Heny G was in full flow, playing a heavyweight selection of old school garage which had everyone inside the club moving. Heny has been mixing for over ten years and his set was a flawless example, not only of the tunes to drop but of when to drop them. Not only was each track well mixed but the set had a sense of direction starting with hard hitting instrumentals decorated with vocal snippets and developing into old school classics like “Leaving on a Jetplane”. The crowd couldn’t have been better. There was enough room to dance but the place had a real rave feel to it and good vibes all round.

Next up came Scratcha who has been presenting the breakfast show on Rinse FM for as long as I’ve been listening to it. As always his mixing was tight and his set exuded unbelievable amounts of energy, pushing the mighty Funktion One soundsystem to its limits. Scratcha tore his way through an hour of hard hitting UK Funky dropping unknown dubs and club classics as well as personalised VIPs such as a rework or Major Lazer’s ‘Pon de Floor’. The audience response was unbelievable throughout his set, with a huge group around the booth demonstrating the strength of the interaction between the crowd and the DJ. As always Leeds’ own MC Farze kept things rolling along nicely, providing the link between artist and audience as Scratcha pushed the system louder than I’ve ever heard it.

To close the night, Ramadanman stepped up, starting with a similar style to Scratcha but with more of a two-step flavour. As always his mixing was tight and his choice of tunes, excellent.
